Football Fan Park Security in Bristol: The Prospect Building and Sawmills

Football brings people together like few other events. A goal can lift thousands of supporters to their feet in a moment. A missed penalty can change the mood just as quickly. At the final whistle, large numbers of people may all want to leave, celebrate or find a bar at the same time.

That atmosphere is what makes football fan parks so exciting. It is also why professional event security, crowd management and door supervision are essential.

From UEFA Euro 2024 through to the 2026 World Cup, Airsec Group has been proud to support major football screenings at The Prospect Building and the Strike Fan Zone at Sawmills in Bristol.

Across both indoor and outdoor venues, our teams helped thousands of supporters enjoy live football in a safe, welcoming and professionally managed environment.

Bristol’s biggest football screenings…

The Prospect Building, formerly known as Propyard, became a major Bristol destination for England’s Euro 2024 matches. The indoor venue provided space for approximately 3,000 people, with large screens, live entertainment, food, bars and appearances from football personalities.

The venue later returned for the 2026 World Cup, screening England matches as part of a full fan park experience. The The Prospect Building event listing shows the scale and atmosphere created around these fixtures.

Airsec also supported the Strike Fan Zone at Sawmills, a weatherproof outdoor venue capable of welcoming up to approximately 6,000 people. With giant screens, pre-match entertainment, bars and independent food traders, Sawmills presented a different operating environment from the indoor venue.

Both locations required a detailed and flexible approach to security. The plans needed to reflect the venue layout, expected attendance, match profile, operating hours, alcohol provision, access arrangements and likely customer movement.

Security that supports the experience

Good fan park security should be visible, approachable and proportionate.

Visitors should feel confident that trained professionals are present, while still being able to enjoy the match without unnecessary disruption. Our teams worked as part of the wider event operation, coordinating with organisers, venue teams, bar staff, production personnel, medical provision and event control.

The objective was not simply to respond when something went wrong. It was to identify concerns early, keep people moving safely and help prevent avoidable issues from developing.

Across the events, Airsec personnel supported:

  • Customer entry and search operations
  • Ticket and accreditation checks
  • Queue management
  • Crowd movement and circulation
  • Bar and service-area monitoring
  • Screening areas and viewing spaces
  • Restricted and operational areas
  • Stage and production-area protection
  • Welfare concerns and customer assistance
  • Emergency and evacuation procedures
  • Security supervision and event control
  • Radio communication between teams
  • Safe and orderly dispersal after matches

This combination of customer service, observation and operational readiness is central to our approach to event security.

Entry, ticketing and search

The customer journey begins before supporters reach the screening area.

Clear entry arrangements help reduce confusion and congestion, particularly when large numbers of people arrive close to kick-off. Our teams supported ticket and accreditation checks, directed customers towards the correct entry points and helped maintain organised queues.

Entry and search teams also carried out bag checks and personal searches in line with the event’s arrangements. These checks were conducted professionally and respectfully, helping to prevent prohibited items from entering the venue while keeping the queue moving.

At busy fan parks, small delays can quickly create pressure at the entrance. Good communication, clear positioning and effective supervision allow teams to identify developing congestion and make sensible adjustments.

The same principle applied to access-controlled areas. Staff, contractors, performers and authorised customers needed to reach the right locations, while restricted spaces and operational areas remained protected from unauthorised access.

Managing crowds before, during and after the match

Football crowds do not behave in exactly the same way throughout an event.

Before kick-off, supporters may arrive in waves. Queues can build at entrances, bars, toilets and food outlets. At half-time, thousands of people may move at once. After the final whistle, customers may celebrate, discuss the result, return to bars or head towards the exits.

Airsec teams monitored these changing patterns and helped guide customer movement around the venues. The aim was to reduce unnecessary congestion and maintain safe routes without taking away from the atmosphere.

This is where on-the-ground security is superior to CCTV monitoring alone. Cameras can provide useful oversight, but they cannot greet a customer, explain where to go, recognise when someone needs welfare support or assist immediately when crowd movement changes. Manned guarding provides a visible, human presence capable of observing, communicating and acting in real time.

The Prospect Building: indoor event security

With an approximate capacity of 3,000 people, The Prospect Building provided a large indoor environment for football screenings and matchday entertainment.

Our deployment covered the full customer journey, from arrival and entry through to the final whistle and departure. Teams were positioned to support the entrances, screening areas, bars, circulation routes and restricted spaces.

Indoor fan parks can create their own pressures. Sound, lighting, alcohol service and a concentrated audience all contribute to an energetic environment. Busy areas can develop around bar points, toilets and viewing areas, particularly immediately before kick-off and following significant moments in the match.

Our supervisors maintained communication with event management and other operational teams throughout the event. Radio communication allowed information to be shared quickly, helping the team respond consistently while keeping interventions calm and proportionate.

Sawmills: outdoor fan zone security

Sawmills presented a much larger outdoor footprint, with capacity for up to approximately 6,000 people.

Outdoor fan zones require security planning that reflects the whole site. Entry points, perimeter areas, bars, food traders, screening zones, emergency routes and customer circulation all need to work together.

The weatherproof Strike Fan Zone brought supporters together for large-scale screenings, live entertainment and food and drink. Airsec’s responsibilities included supporting entry and search, monitoring crowd movement, protecting restricted areas and assisting with safe dispersal at the end of each fixture.

Outdoor events can also change quickly because of weather, changing light levels, customer movement and the wider layout of the site. Visible staff positioning and strong radio communication helped the operation remain flexible throughout the event.

Football crowds can change in seconds

A conventional event plan is important, but a fan park operation must also be ready for the unexpected.

The crowd mood may change rapidly after:

  • A goal or equaliser
  • A missed or awarded penalty
  • A controversial refereeing decision
  • A sending-off
  • A late winner
  • A disappointing result
  • The final whistle
  • Alcohol-related welfare concerns
  • Rival supporters or competing allegiances

These moments do not automatically create problems, but they can produce sudden movement, emotional reactions or pressure in specific areas.

Our teams were briefed to remain alert and approachable, identify developing concerns early and communicate clearly with supervisors and event control. Where intervention was required, the emphasis was on a calm, professional and proportionate response.

The welfare of customers remained an important part of the operation. Security staff could assist people who were distressed, separated from friends, unwell or unsure where to go, while coordinating with medical teams and event management when further support was needed.

Emergency procedures and safe dispersal

Emergency planning is a core part of professional event security.

At both fan park locations, our teams supported the wider arrangements for emergency access, clear routes, incident response and evacuation if required. Staff were briefed on their responsibilities and remained in communication with event control and other operational departments.

Safe dispersal was equally important. The end of a match can create a concentrated movement of people, especially after a high-profile fixture or an England victory. Customers may leave together, remain on site to celebrate or move towards transport links and nearby venues.

Airsec personnel helped manage this process calmly and professionally. By keeping routes clear, monitoring crowd movement and working with the event team, we helped supporters leave safely and in an orderly manner.
